I got it sorted before 9 this morning. Got up for work at 0650 (had a lie in, got later train!); turned on all lights and clattered around a bit.

Went out and left lights on.

I've been re-watching Boys from the Blackstuff over the last few evenings. Just reached the end - <redacted as it's a spoiler>

I'd recommend it to some of the Mail, Times and Telegraph aficionados over in General as an idea of the way the "Doom" they seem to masochistically long for might work out for them, but there's no point casting pearls before swine.

When an artist creates a brilliant and powerful work that clearly and beautifully expresses truths of fundamental importance to all of us, and you draw it to the attention of people like that, and they in their ignorance mock and deride and jeer at it - well, it's just depressing.

The thing that annoys me is that despite all their advantages of intelligence, education, and social status, they can't find anything better to do with their minds than to cling to such petty prejudices as are supported by the so-called "newspapers" they read.

Years ago, when I was comparatively young, I spent several years of my life amongst those whom the denizens of General would regard with loathing and contempt - Punks, Hell's Angels, drug dealers, petty criminals. (These days they all dress as chavs, but even amongst chavs there is great variety.)

Many - indeed most - of those people were (though often un- or under-educated) intelligent people; and it was a rare thing indeed to find one who, when treated with respect, didn't offer equal or greater respect in return. Now that is something you can't say about the rabid bourgeoisie of General :spit <- soon to be a major motion smily
