Why does ControlC get called BEL ?

I wondered that too

I know it's already been answered but ......

.... if you call up a command prompt on your friendly windows PC and press Control-G you will get ^G displayed

Now press return and it sounds the modern day equivalent of the BEL. i.e. a BEEP.
