The civil war in Lebanon in the 1980s meant that the hemp fields, which had for centuries been producing hashish of the highest quality, were grubbed up and replanted with poppy, on the basis that heroin (derived from poppies) provided much more money with which to buy weaponry.

This was the cause of much of the explosion in heroin consumption in the "Western world" (financial recession ensured a ready market amongst the socially disadvantaged), the other increased source of supply being from Afghanistan (where the Taleban were being supported by the US government in opposition to the USSR, to the extent that the CIA facilitated heroin exports).

Ultimately, it all means that we shall never know such fine hashish as Red Lebanese, or Afghani Black, again - the plant strains that had been developed over a thousand generations have been lost by lack of use.
