I don't often use butter. Furthermore, the fridge isn't very good.
I mashed up the mash with butter, as one does, and ultimately finished the whole thing off with a few minutes under a very hot grill, to give it a lovely golden finish
Turns out the butter was long past its "best before" date and had become a tad rancid. Result: rancid shepherd's pie
The mince still tasted OK, but a shepherd's pie with inedible mash isn't a shepherd's pie - it's just some mince, with inedible mashed potato on the same plate
