They are under cover for the night, and I will then give them a little rub down and start the process all over again.

Doing the spindles on the stairs was the worst for me - took me most evenings for a couple of weeks. Rubbed down the old paint first, then a coat of primer and two coats of satin, rubbing down between each coat. I still get flashbacks...
