        If you look through that list of railway accidents, you'll find that next-to-last (i.e. next-to-earliest) is the tragic death of William Huskisson MP, who has the distinction of being the first person to be run over by a train - Stephenson's Rocket, to be precise

        Apart from the Huskisson Memorial and the statuary adorning the grave near the scene of this unfortunate incident, there used also to be a bronze statue of Huskisson near the centre of Liverpool.

        The last time I went past there, riding in a taxi from Lime Street station to my Uncle George's funeral in the late Eighties, the plinth remained, but the statue appeared to have been nicked, presumably to be sold for scrap.

              Every day I go through some railweay accident hotspots - Hither Green and Lewisham - a few biggies there...
