    Indeed... family business too - it was usually the wife and proprietoress behind the counter.

    I suspect Chinese gangsters saw a successful business and suggested that the strain of continuing to run it, rather than selling out to them, might have harmful health consequences

        Smilies have moved around while I've been out... trying to keep us on the ball, I daresay

          I had one of those random encounters that one only gets in fairly vibrant areas as I headed home from the FMB bar just now.

          Having crossed the road, I was immediately accosted by a young black gentleman who spoke perfect English but with a twang that makes me suspect he's either Dutch or Danish. The circumstances of the encounter (on the street late at night but in a safe-ish area with no obvious element of menace) led me into my usual mode of speech when mildly confused by a situation: Received Pronunciation that would put the Royal Family to shame, applied in the most inappropriate or unnecessary context

          Viz.:

          [YBG]: Good Evening Sir, have you had a good night?

          [Me] <tries to scuttle past rapidly without appearing rude> Yes, thank you.

          <YBG clearly has a further question so I stop a couple of yards beyond him>

          [YBG] I'm sorry to trouble you but I'm looking for a place around this corner <gestures towards corner> that is a sauna for gay people. Do you know where it is?

          [Me] I'm awfully sorry, I'm afraid I don't.

          [YBG] OK, thank you, goodnight

          <Me scuttles home>

              It won't be the same... that was honestly the best Chinese takeaway I've ever used, and it was also the only one around here that had a "They don't have cockroaches or piss in the wok" certificate from the City Council

              They didn't have cockroaches or piss in the wok on the day we came to visit
