    Lobbying Mr Speaker on IR35

As I've mentioned on other threads, my MP is the new Speaker of the House Lindsay Hoyle and he will almost certainly win his seat. No main party will contest it.

According to the one and only canvassing leaflet I've received in the post he will still be running his surgeries. I'm not sure what influence I could have on national politics if any because he won't vote on anything as a neutral.

I'm tempted to book an appointment and ask him if he can use his influence to push an IR35 debate up the agenda. I could reel of a list of unintended consequences of IR35 such as impact on working families and people with disabilities who depend on temporary contracts to keep them in employment. It's possible that highly skilled people will be pushed into protracted unemployment and benefits. Not to mention the overall impact on the economy.

Does anyone understand the political system well enough to say if I'd be wasting my time?

    You're wasting your time.

You've obviously got a personal agenda throwing disabilities in to the mix so if it makes you happy go for it.

Didn't the Labour party actually invent IR35?

        He's not labour anymore.

NLUK, I think you're probably right regarding time wasting. However, for tulips and fits, I can push your agenda too if you tell me what it is?

My constituency is/was that of John Bercow. My experience would indicate that you have effectively lost your MP to the role of Speaker.

Agreed. Hoyle will not vote on anything, and he will have stood down from the Labour party - although obviously he will no doubt retain his socialist views, which are well established.

Also, following the 9 year debacle that was Bercow, I think he will be going out of his way not to show any kind of bias towards any cause, no matter how worthy.

IR35 isn't going away and nor, I suspect are the 2020 changes. Your efforts are better directed at your client(s) to ensure they understand that they don't have to blindly shove everyone inside IR35 and take on a 20% overhead as a result.

but experience has shown that it's the contractor taking this hit.

But the legislation states the engager is responsible for the Employer NI. The fact that the rate is reduced to compensate is of no consequence, hone up your negotiation skills.

I'm fine thank you but have to ask, as you aren't a contractor yet, how can you have a detailed agenda about something that is going to affect your career, past and present? Do you really know enough about IR35 to challenge why these changes are a step too far?

We've had plenty of half arsed attempts to create petitions created by people who are just having a knee jerk reaction and vocalizing their unhappiness meaning the petition is complete rubbish. I remember one way back in the day which actually made us look really bad and did us more harm than good.

Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
