I suspect you used aggressive avoidance too (EBT) which HMRC now consider evasion. Anyone who uses that now is going to get a good kicking.
Why not contract(once you are out of bankruptcy) using a limited company or umbrella?
Nobody has been prosecuted over Rangers? Or any other EBT for that matter (as far as I know?)
I stand to be corrected thoughComment

Some of the mass marketed EBT arrangements (not Rangers which was allegedly bespoke) have resulted in users getting close to COP9 territory, especially as they lose consistently in Court.Best Forum Adviser & Forum Personality of the Year 2018.

Of course, some promoters of loan schemes said that the loans do not need to be declared on tax returns. That could lead to a COP9 too.
HMRC are getting more and more insane - its like watching NK or POTUS. Who knows what they will do next?Comment

Other than that he says you would need to pay every penny of tax avoided in last 21 years. My fault i think i would need a restart after one year when become a discharged bankrupt. Please do take care of your self and dont try to avoid tax as it has been a long and painful month. I still have to pay tax adviser even dont have to pay money for tax in order to avoid prosecution. I have discussed with him all going on in contractor industry , the action and big group and WTT consulting etc. and hmrc clubing down all avoidance schemes. I'm afraid that this could well be an inclusive rather than exclusive condition..."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

I think a firm quoting £40k says all you need to know. That's perhaps 80/100 hours of work and points to a long and detailed analysis over many years of income/tax.
There are days when I realise why I don't do COP9 (and never have done really) and I don't envy the OP.Best Forum Adviser & Forum Personality of the Year 2018.
