      Presumably their voicemail was hacked.

The charge on which the former Downing Street Director of Communications was convicted was "conspiracy to intercept voicemails".

This isn't "phone hacking" in a very strict interpretation of the words. Of course, most people don't bother with the fine distinction between "unauthorised access to a specific facility of the telecommunications networks that support the use of telephonic apparati commonly known as 'phones'" and "phone hacking", but the distinction is nonetheless a real one, though possibly not worth getting too worked up over

I just can't get the words 'nine bob note' out of my head. Help?

And, yes, it wasn't hacking. Usually that's an activity for relatively clever people.

Re the post by Zippy - I'd just like to point out that I have no knowledge or recollection of this.

So they hacked the network side where the voice mail was stored rather than anything to do with the actual phone?

One method they used is for one person to call the number, then another person calls it simultaneously and goes straight to voicemail. Enter the default PIN (as most people never change it) and listen to the messages. Easy when you know how

A couple of networks now make you change your PIN when you set up voicemail.
