So do you think Saudi Arabia is severely repressive of gays? The material prosperity of a nation is not an abiding possession; the deeds of its people are.

So stoning isn't severe enough, you'd prefer the gas chamber ?Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostWouldn't call that severe repression....Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.
No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.Comment

Two Sides of the Same Coin
Lets face it Iran and Saudi are both as bad as each other. On one side you have fundamentalist shi-ites who want to control what people say/think/wear/do coupled with a hatred of the west and its freedoms, on the other side you have fundamentalist sunnis who want to control what people say/think/wear/do coupled with a hatred of the west and its freedoms. If it wasn't for a particular event in history they would all be on the same side who would still want to control what people say/think/wear/do coupled with a hatred of the west and its freedoms...Comment

I disagree with that. They may both be severely repressive but Saudi is significantly worse, and Iran has some aspects of civil society that we should find encouraging. And also, my beef is with the state and government of Iran, not the people. Iran was showing signs of becoming a flourishing democracy before the CIA toppled the democratic government.Originally posted by kal View PostLets face it Iran and Saudi are both as bad as each other. So what do you make of political oppression under the Shah following the 1953 CIA backed coup against the democratic government? Was that 'free'?Originally posted by CloudWalker View PostIran was fine in the 60s and 70s untill Islam fuct it up. The freedom to believe in superstitious nonsense or walk around like assassins is the exact same freedom to hold a public nude event; erode one and you erode the other.Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostSo perhaps UK have got it about right, so you think? But I discovered nothing else but depraved, excessive superstition.
