    Many parts of the Ocean are without Silica. Iron on its own will not stimulate a diatom bloom. The Oceans also need Phosphates and Nitrates so unless these key ingredients exist then nothing will happen. Silica also keeps the metal elements safe by preventing them from oxidising so the iron, zinc, magnesium, etc are stable. because they are also nano sized they float around in the higher reaches of the water for longer and are considerably easier to consume. This is why only a small area of the oceans need to be fertilised.

    Our friend is jumping on Ironsulphide which comes in large heavy molecules. Not only does it rely on the presence of other elements being already in the water (such as silica) it is very inefficient in how it enters the photosynthesis process which is why so much would be needed.

      The amount of product needed to treat aquariums is tiny . The manufacturers make very little out of it whereas the retailers simply water it down and coin it. The original product costs €14 per litre I litre broadly speaking will treat 10 million litres of water

            Assuming 1l = 1 Kg to a first approximation. It can't be cheap to manufacture all those light as a feather nano-molecules and embed them in silica....

            BTW what proprtion of the ocean is sufficiently silica-deficient to make a difference between iron-only and iron + silica?

              How would I know?

              I am sure they will do you a deal and employ some cheap local to unpick the silica bits out of the molecules for you!

                Erratum, I see the price of the solid product is just 300 Rupee / Kg. About 5 bucks. So you can save the world for a bargain $2.32 per person per year.

                    Which is why I asked, wondered if you really knew or were just winging it.

                    Maybe there's a reason the focus for research is on using biologically available iron in the Southern Ocean, maybe all those studies showing OF is of limited utillity have a point ....
