I'm paranoid about leaving yesterday's food in my mouth. I never used until a year or two ago but started to use a tongue scrapper before brushing my teeth. You'll never believe the gunk you remove even after twenty or so scrapes.
All that said though what you have sounds like a symptom of something requiring a visit to the GP.

It is gross but then possibly it's one of those things about bodies that just ARE gross, like how you are permanently infested with various bacteria.
Tongue scrapings and inter-dental brushing after drinking red wine in bed without brushing your teeth the night before are especially bad though, particularly if the red wine was following a lamb curry (lamb because it sticks between your teeth).
