Why not?
Disclaimer: I'm one of Experts Exchange's administrators. I'm not an employee, but have been a member since 1999 and part of the volunteer staff since 2002. Same username there as here, so I'm not that hard to track down.
psychocandy,
Currently got free trial but wondering if anyone has used this long term.
You could say that, yes... *laughing* ... I've never paid for EE; like a lot of people, I answered questions and have earned the Premium Services subscription, but you can use most of EE without having the paid/earned services. About the only things an unpaid subscription can't do are ask questions and browse through the Previously Asked Questions (PAQ).
The paywall disappeared about six months ago, though. Now, if you go to EE from SERPs, whether you're a member or not, you'll see the actual page.
doodab,
Old, tired joke. EE never did use the unhyphenated version as a domain, and bought it at one time just to bury it but decided it wasn't worth it. It's now owned by a hit farm.
vetran,
I find someone as stupid as me has already asked the question
Ain't that great? Keeps computer types working all over the world. Heaven forbid someone actually writes an OS/program that people can't screw up somehow...
NickFitz,
Stackoverflow was created for the sole purpose of rendering the wretched and horrible Experts Exchange irrelevant. It's done a good job of that, IMHO
Doesn't suck to have Matt Cutts on speed dial either. But unlike Stack, EE actually has a business model that works, so despite Mr Atwood and Mr Spolsky doing everything they can, including kissing Mr Cutts where he likes it, to shut it down, EE has survived Panda and the innumerable algorithm changes Google has thrown at it, survived any number of threads and posts filled with ... um... "inaccurate information", and just released a fairly important update yesterday.
Yes, Stack is free. Good for them; they'll no doubt make it up on the volume. There are also over 760,000 people who have never gotten their questions answered, and who knows how many more that have been deleted because... well... someone didn't like the way it was written. Stack's family of sites is about coming up with the "right" or "best" -- not with solving your problem. I would be ashamed of myself to be running a site that purports to solve problems to have that many that aren't solved.
That Experts Exchange has built its community around actually being about solving someone's problem instead of feeding the egos of Red Bull infused junior developers is fine with me; there's room in the world for all kinds.
All,
It isn't my intent to convince anyone to move to a different site; if you're happy with someplace else, that's okay with me. On the other hand, if you haven't been to EE for a while, it's worth taking a look at.
Thank you for your attention.

The simple fact is that SO is linkable to, EE for many years wasn't resulting in SO leaping up the page ranks. Everything else is soar grapes which on reflection is exactly how the entirety of EE's sales pitch comes across..

I've always liked the idea of sites you can offer money for someone to spend more than a passing amount of time on your problem. SO does get people writing long, excellent replies (from genuine interest rather than ego tripping in most cases) but you can't guarantee it and if your question is a bit specialist or requires some research/testing, you probably won't get much luck. Being able to use a site like EE as a sort of micro-freelancing site appeals to me: "I want sample code how to build an MP4 video from a 256x256 array I keep re-populating".Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

Before Stack came along, EE was always on top for programming related questions and when it was free it was quite good. It then had its moment when it thought it could charge users and when it hid behind the paywall Google decided to downvote it. I think then to get around that problem, EE was displaying the actual thread content right below the page and if you did bother to scroll down you would realise you didnt need to login.Vote Corbyn !
