Exactly - it's the photocard that expires and the non-endorsable offence is in not surrendering it for renewal. It has no bearing on your right to drive.

Expire? How old are you?! Mine won't expire until I'm about 80.

(I won't give the expiry year because some people round here may be quite handy at arithmetic.)

edit: After firing from the hip, I read the thread and it appears the photo thingie is valid for only ten years. Hmm, better check when mine needs renewing.

        Renew a driving licence?

I though they only expired when you hit 70

Mine had expired for well over a year before i got it sorted. Every time I did a trackday the guy checking licenses behind the counter would give me really patronizing grief, as if he's my dad about a thousand pound fine if they catch up with me.

I eventually got it sorted because it was becoming harder and harder to bite my tongue and not say "Are you going to give me the ******* sticker or not? Yes? So shut up!".

So it is in fact the photocard that expires, and not just the photo.

If you have a photo license you have to update the photo every ten years. It's a non-endorsable offence not to, but you might have to go to court and stump up a grand.

Assuming you have a photocard licence, have a look at the date by 4b, which tells you when the photocard (not the licence) expires.

                  hmmm... inneresting.

Seems like those of us used to the old paper licences aren't up to speed on finer details of these photo ID cards.

You are supposed to get a reminder but I didn't get one.

First I knew about it was when I tried to hire a car a few weeks ago when mine was in for service.

I forgot to say - if you look on your photo license you'll see 4 dates. 2 on the front (4a and 4b) for when the photolicense was issued/expires, and 2 on the back (for each vehicle type) stating when you got the right to drive that class of vehicle, and when that right expires.
