If I were you I'd buy either:

1) a detached, old, characterful house that has been done up (if you must have a house)

or

2) a large, high up, one bed penthouse with a view

WHS, up to but not including "or"

Alexei, if your office is still in Aston I'm sure you could get a nice affordable detached place round Tamworth somewhere, or even Sutton Coldfield

Erdington would be even closer, but I'm (genuinely) not sure whether or not that is a desirable area.

Tell me about it - I'm sure Sky boxes must have software to slightly shift ad break timings, so these can be started sooner, or often immediately, when one turns on the thing or starts channel hopping.

Ad breaks have "just started" too often to be a coincidence.

I don't bother watching "channel TV" in my lodgings at all these days, and rarely watch anything other than news headlines on my Sky box at the weekend.

If they don't some of the set top boxes do (enigma based AFAIR) have it or an HTPC with commskip and just watch an hour or so later?

I have 3 tuners in my HTPC its ace! With XBMC on a PI then I can record anything from any TV (eventually) and watch it when I want on any TV or tablet.

New build in local desireable area - semi with 4 bedrooms.

Issues:

1) car won't fit into "garage" - well maybe 2 inches on each side of space, not willing to get aggro every day
2) private road rather than public
3) £1 mln spent for some kind of drainage system to mitigate flood risk ...
4) no Virgin cables laid and since it's consevation area getting Sky dish might be issue
5) they want it reserved because others put offers - £2k of which 650 won't be refunded
