Did you not see Mind the Gap last night on BBC2 ?

I believe there already is a tunnel. A (now disused) rail tunnel. There is absolutely a string case for getting it back into service.

Out of interest what it's like by Train between Manchester and Leeds for commuting ??
Horrible unless you are already in easy reach of Manchester Piccadilly. It's an hour, no changes, but if you have to travel into the centre to get back out again to Leeds it turns into a nightmare that can take two or three times as long.

How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Just for commuting the missus will be in Warrington, can get a train from there to Manchester then onto Leeds. If it turns up it's a close call between getting digs or commuting by train
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

I have the joy of travelling daily from Rochdale to Warrington. The whole journey is 29.1 miles. I set off at 7am and usually can just make it there by 8, often its 8:30+. I live 3 miles from the M60 and the site at the other end is about 2 from the M62. The last 2 miles takes 10 mins and the first 3 takes about the same. That means that the 24.1 miles in between take 40-70 mins. It's been so bad of late that I have taken to sacking the M60 and driving into the middle of manchester, down past the arena and out on the M602. Double those times if you set off at 7:30. The traffic is just crap!

                I preferred version 1!

I used to commute from Leeds to Manchester on the train, not the worse idea, used to change at Stalybridge and get a train to Victoria

You can actually go direct from Warrington but you run the risk of ending up on on of the nasty Busses on Rails 2 carriage jobs and they are just nasty.
