they should get tom from www.otherhand.org onto it. he'd say, and i'd agree with him, that the reason they haven't found the plane is because they are looking in the wrong place.

I think my second theory is looking more likely now, i.e. the plane changed course almost back on itself (perhaps due to a fault, perhaps not?) and, rightly or wrongly, the Malaysians assumed it was being flown back towards Kuala Lumpur to prang the Twin Towers building there a-la 9/11, and they simply shot it down.Work in the public sector? But assuming the terrorists are of the same background as other people who use this MO I can't see them attacking a Moslem country.
Which leaves the possibility open that they were some non Islamist group. But who?Comment

If was that simple, they'd know where to find the wreckage.Originally posted by OwlHoot View PostI think my second theory is looking more likely now, i.e. the plane changed course almost back on itself (perhaps due to a fault, perhaps not?) and, rightly or wrongly, the Malaysians assumed it was being flown back towards Kuala Lumpur to prang the Twin Towers building there a-la 9/11, and they simply shot it down.Comment

It may have been a personal jihad by a disgruntled or deranged individual (the pilot?), or perhaps a Shiite muslim terrorist group wanting to take a pop at Sunnis (of which Islam sect Malaysia officially is).Originally posted by Gittins Gal.. assuming the terrorists are of the same background as other people who use this MO I can't see them attacking a Moslem country. ..
But as I said, it may not have been a genuine terrorist attack anyway, just something that looked like one and spooked the local authorities into downing the plane.
Assuming they _want_ to find the wreckage. Recovering a few charred bodies is of no consequence if they know damned well what happened but to avoid possible sectarian and/or financial unrest (*) don't want this to become public knowledge.Originally posted by Peoplesoft bloke View PostIf was that simple, they'd know where to find the wreckage.
edit: (*) or embarrassment if they over-reacted to a non-existent terrorist threatLast edited by OwlHoot; 12 March 2014, 11:59.Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment

I can see you've put some thought into this Owly, and I respect that.
However I am clinging vehemently to HyperD's alien theory.

Most Muslim sects seem to be have a hatred of each us that far surpases that of America, I don't think we can rule it outOriginally posted by Gittins Gal View PostHmmm... inneresting.

Or China / Russia carrying it out as an excuse to crack down on Islamic extremists
Either is just as plausible as the otherSocialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.
No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.Comment

Fair point - but given the large number of Chinese nationals involved I'd be more than slightly worried about what the Chinese might have to say if I was in charge.Originally posted by OwlHoot View PostI

It's not realistic to imagine that they could cover up the shooting down of a civilian plane - the Russians couldn't do it, nor the Septics, so the Malaysians have got no chance. I would bet a considerable sum (if Paddy Power offered odds), that this plane wasn't shot down by the Malaysians.Comment

Neither china or russia need an excuse. And not being able to find the plane doesn't give them one. So that doesn't seem very likely.Originally posted by MicrosoftBob View PostOr China / Russia carrying it out as an excuse to crack down on Islamic extremistsWhile you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you.
