Still remember the days of unplugging the phone line, plugging in the modem, listening to the handshake. Even had to pay for the 'call' in those days (60p an hour I think). Demon internet was provider. 14.4k modem, then 28.8. then 33.2. Top stuff.

I remember when we got broadband. Way behind the rest of the country mind. Then only ever got 1.5Mb at best but its was cracking to start with.

Today heralds the start of 39Mb fibre broadband I hope. Got a cracking deal from Sky as well. Actually cheaper to convert over to their fibre and phone than to keep my existing phone and broadband.

Imagine the porn I can download now!
One of the enduring puzzles of modem days was the significance of the bdong bdong bdong noise when a modem connected !

Brstewards won't run fibre down my drive as it's too far from the roadway - looked into the options of DIY but seems to be a no-starter so stuck with copper
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Ok just got home and did one of them online broadband speed checker things and the results were

51.13 Mbps up and 8.41Mbps down

so does that mean I am getting approx 50 Meg download speed -- or is this one of those things that does not equate like that?

(I have worked into It for over 10 years I should know this!)

I'm not with you - are those figures the right way round? 50 Mbps is 50 megabit broadband, which equates to being able to shift 6.25 Megabytes per second.

Haha, then yes - that's 50 Megabit / Meg / Mb / Mbit /Mbps (They're all used interchangeably) broadband which works out at 6.25 Megabytes / MB per second.

                  ...
We would send you a Fibre Hub, free of charge, and this will bring Fibre from the cabinet, to your property
They missed the comma here. English grammar is not their strong point, and the comma makes it clear, if you read English, is it was intended to be written.

Well, it did work. Plugged in and off we go.

Getting about 28Mbps which is not bad.

So much for Skys 'if you pay for 40Mb we'll guarantee 40Mbps but otherwise, if you pay for 80Mbps it'll only be up to 42Mbps'. Obviously, complete bulltulip.

Although if I were now to pay for 80Mb would I get more than 28Mbps? How does it work? Is it like a dual channel or something?

Or am I forever stuck on 28Mbps now because thats all my line will take?

                      Ask Sky.

Also, does fibre get full speed immediately? Last time we switched ADSL[2] provider, they initially set it to a low speed and then it crept up over the first few days, allegedly so they could pick the right speed/stability compromise.
