Indeed - flaunting wealth is quite vulgar and reserved for the nouveau riche. You'll never see a proper posh person saying " I am considerably richer than yaouu" That's for the TOWIE lotOriginally posted by Mich the Tester View Post'Posh' is not abouot spending more money than other people."Is someone you don't like allowed to say something you don't like? With the industrial revolution (and arguably before that with an emerging rich merchant class) came newly acquired wealth. To preserve status, the landed wealthy needed to develop codes of behaviour that alongside exclusive institutions could maintain their social status. Not flaunting wealth may be one of those behaviours, but the wealth and expenditure remain nonetheless.Originally posted by Jog On View PostSP

But it doesn't necessarily make you 'posh'.Originally posted by Old Greg View PostBut there is still a causal relationship. Having money tends to be one cause of being posh. Having money tends to be one cause of spending more money than other people. And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014Comment

Smoking does not necessarily cause lung cancer. Nor is lung cancer always caused by smoking. And when lung cancer is caused by smoking there are other causal factors. Smoking has a similar relationship with COPD.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostBut it doesn't necessarily make you 'posh'.
Substitute wealth for smoking. Substitute poshness for lung cancer. Substitute expenditure for COPD. Ignore any statistics implicit in the first paragraph. Accept that it is not a perfect analogy.Comment
