very interesting. The canary in the coal mine keeps on singing

I wonder if there are any here who agree that the Antarctic will be 'The only habitable continent by 2100'

latest news is that the australian ice breaker(Aurora Australis), the last big chance, has had to Aurora Australis abandons attempt to save Akademik Shokalskiy in Antarctica

This is what happens when you rely on models instead of checking your thermometer. You might be able to fool the Guardanistas, but mother nature will carry on doing what mother nature does

You guys really have nothing but Straw Men do you? Sir David King said no such thing.

Glad we agree on that then. The Antartic will not become habitable any time soon

what about the Arctic though ???

'billions of us will die and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable by the end of the 21st century' - Lovelock

do you agree that is a load of old cobblers as well ?

LOL! I am 'glad we agree' that Sir David King's views were totally misrepresented in yet another made-up assertion from the opinion pages....

I've a lot of respect for Lovelock's body of earlier work, but as he reaches his nineties he seems to relish the 'Maverick' tag more than is wise. His views (from 2006) were not based on any consultations with professional climate scientists but on his own projections which were way higher than the IPCC's most extreme case. And once again, he was writing in the opinion pages of a newspaper. And he has since had a rethink

We could spend the rest of the day on examples of GW BS from the editorials, blogs, and opinion pages (remember AmazonGate? The head of the IPCC making millions from his position?) but I am more interested in the primary source science...

Oh, sorry, I was forgetting ...

we agree that neither pole will be habitable by the end of the century.

                good. thats progress

Do me a favour, next time one of these eco-loonies makes an absurd claim, speak up at the time.

Well there are favours you could do for the whole board, and at the same time do wonders for your credibility

                  - Before parrotting these 'absurd claims' please check that they were actually made - that will also save a lot of time.
                  - Do not put words in posters' mouths - I've said nothing about the habitability of the Poles
                  - We all make mistakes (Hansen predicting 20 degree rise by 2025), when it happens a correction and apology works wonders.

In case anyone is confused, the Chief Scietific Advisor, Sir David King never said that Antacrtica would be the only habitable continent by 2100. In fact a complaint was made to Ofcom about the claim..

There's this wonderful thing called Google, guys.

now that you are coming round PJ , there is one last thing we have to agree on

the current crop of eejits who are trapped in the ice in Antartica are just that, eejits

Well, ultimate responsibility for navigation lies with the captain - it is a combined touristic and scientific expedition, so with perfect hindsight he made an error of judgement. However the vessel is reinforced and quite safe so hopefully the scenario of a few days unexpected delay followed by a resumption of the voyage will play out, rather than the worst case of a helicopter rescue.

Were the passengers on the Concordia 'eejits'?

I hope you are not anti-science; the aims of the expedition seem perfectly admirable to me, the science case is here and I wish them well. Being icebound at Christmas cannot have been much like fun.
