Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

You didn't answer the question. I have no doubt the other driver was a twat.
I'm trying to establish if you were a twat for speeding, too.
          Come on, be honest.

Get one of those car cam things and if you drive the same piece of road regularly see if you can catch the twat at it again and get his reg.

            Glad you're ok.

move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking, once you have started to overtake. Allow plenty of room. Move back to the left as soon as you can but do not cut in.

The above requirement will require you to increase your speed to complete the action safely.

The cars in front were travelling below the speed limit which was my reasoning to pass in the first place.

Thanks platypus. I have been thinking of getting a dash cam for a while now anyway. this will clinch it.

                Anyone got any recommendations?

Nowhere there does it say you're allowed to drive in excess of the speed limit.
If the line of cars was extra slow, then you'd be entitled to overtake.
if they were on or just below the limit, you were being impatient.

This is like trying to debate with OH. He has not said he was speeding, you just keep repeating it.

Unless you know something we don't... were you the car in front?

Regardless, our road laws do not work by vigilante justice. If someone is speeding to overtake you, the safe thing is to get out of their way not jump in front of them... if they are a dangerous driver they might pile into you since they're not paying attention. You never know, they might have winter tyres on only two wheels and be unable to slow down...

Report them if you must but do not drive dangerously yourself - pulling out to block them is as illegal as speeding.
