Not sure if that refers to me; I will post another thread regarding this. I'm a lurker who reads posts here, but do get sick of the constant derision of users who simply post a valid topic in the General forum. I've emailed the administrator and don't want to further give feedback on this thread, as it is definitely an interesting topic. In possession of faculties. Almost. -
Possibly, but it isn't. General is labelled (as ZG points out) "abandon hope..." for a reason.Originally posted by dundeedude View PostYou are accurately depicting the assertions made by the other poster.
'General' should be posts that don't quite fit into another category.
Good for the majority. But that's not how CUK works.Originally posted by dundeedude View PostOn the majority of forums posting in a general non-specific topic genre doesn't result in one being derided at every opportunity.
Tell you what, how about checking the forum description and reading the descriptions in the terms and conditions instead?Originally posted by dundeedude View PostIn fact this thread has clearly displayed exactly what masonryan indicated: far too much abuse far too readily dished out - and it's viewed as acceptable by some in a sheep-like manner.
Tell you what, how about the cronies take their persist unamusing 'banter' to "Light Relief" category instead? That is surely where persistently rude and cyclical so-called humourous responses belong and can therefore be expected at every turn? It would make much more sense to reshape the forum in this way.

We also have a "Social" side to our forum. If you are stuck in a boring contract or are benched then we know it is good to let off steam. To help while away your day you can participate in the "General", "Light Relief" and Social / Events" sections of the forum and any sub-forums that they may contain.
Whilst the General forum is in the same section of the site as the Professional forums the posting rules are the same as for the Social side of the site.It doesn't invalidate the right of people to post here, but they should expect that the responses that they get are more in-line with how CUK is "organised", rather than the assumption that just because they want to post in the wrong area of the forum their posts will be treated any differently.Originally posted by dundeedude View PostYet another interesting thread decimated by the typical few who can't afford seriousness - and deviate to outright rudeness - just because it's in 'General', which does not invalidate the right of people to post in such a section to get valid and constructive responses, given that 'General' is probably the best place for this thread.
Good luck. When CUK was last re-organised, the rules were changed and forum labels modified to give a more accurate reflection of what they are like (General used to be labelled as "General issues of interest to contractors" rather than "abandon hope...".Originally posted by dundeedude View PostIf anybody else tires of it, might be worth also sending some feedback to the main admin-of-the-admins.
I see nothing wrong with having a general / non-specific professional sub-forum, but to moan that General is the way it is and shouldn't be isn't going to get you very far.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI hadn't really understood this 'pwned' expression until I read DirtyDog's post.Comment

There are 63,499 threads in General and there are plenty of threads that are serious and did not deviate to out right rudeness. I saw one in October 2011 so I know it's true!!!Originally posted by dundeedude View PostYet another interesting thread decimated by the typical few who can't afford seriousness - and deviate to outright rudeness - just because it's in 'General', which does not invalidate the right of people to post in such a section to get valid and constructive responses, given that 'General' is probably the best place for this thread.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

Every so often someone comes along and tells everyone how they think the forum should be run.
It always ends the same way

I posted a proper response. Why don't you read that and respond instead of moaning?Originally posted by dundeedude View PostYet another interesting thread decimated by the typical few who can't afford seriousness - and deviate to outright rudeness - just because it's in 'General', which does not invalidate the right of people to post in such a section to get valid and constructive responses, given that 'General' is probably the best place for this thread. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. This is my approach too. I spend like I did on my last permie wage to keep my warchest high for any future lean times.Originally posted by SimonMac View PostI still have the permie attitude to money, I budget like there is no tomorrow so I always know exactly where I am financially and how long I have until the money runs out. I also made sure that I got rid of any debts so that my out goings while on the bench will be as minimal as possible
Even that level of permie wage is more than enough for my simple tastes.Comment

One of the best pieces of advice I was given when I first started contracting was to never look at the cost of something and think "that only costs x days work". My former boss made that mistake with his car lease - banked on only needing a couple of days to pay for the monthly lease, and then found that he had no work, no income and a large increase.Originally posted by jmo21 View PostThis is my approach too. Second best piece of advice was never to look at holiday time as "I could be working, so it will cost my £x000 to take a week off". If you do that, then you'll never take a break and burn out.
My take-home from the business has never put me into the higher tax bracket yet - I don't need to take the money, I'd rather whack it into a pension instead.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI hadn't really understood this 'pwned' expression until I read DirtyDog's post.Comment

I did find it easy to spend more in the early days, but was actually quite sensible about what was spent. Things like clearing all outstanding debts, not that I had many, and sorting a few issues like binning the flaky 2nd car and replacing with a far newer and more reliable one......but, from then, just let the excess accrue for the lean times.
Within the first year, I reckon I have sufficient to last around 6 months......of course, it helps that Mrs kevpuk is a permie on a pretty decent salary toolatest-and-greatest solution (TM) kevpuk 2013Comment

I don't spend much these days. I've run out of things to buy.Originally posted by jmo21 View PostThis is my approach too. I spend like I did on my last permie wage to keep my warchest high for any future lean times.

Then my comment was surely not made at you, but those who have trouble remaining polite and courteous. If you never point out negativity or rudeness is unacceptable then it shall continue. Ignoring it here doesn't seem to have worked, would you agree?Originally posted by doodab View PostI posted a proper response. Why don't you read that and respond instead of moaning?
Now if we can stop someone posting a similar thread with one letter of the title altered to pass it off as top tier humour then all hope shall not yet be abandoned :-)
As with all forums, the majority of people are here for the better of the forum, but some get a bit power-happy or deviate to rudeness to irregular users, which I was simply pointing out wasn't entirely great for the function of the forums in the long term.
