After going on the waiting list for an allotment back in March I took a tenancy up with a local plot this morning

I read somewhere that kids today aren't connected to nature enough. Problem solved

Just need to get a days digging in this Sunday. Think I will plant some winter beans as that's what my shiny new book says. A hardy (to zone 8) crop that improves poor soil by fixing nitrogen in it.

And some much needed exercise.

Not cocking them up, but easy for them not to succeed. There was a lot of potato blight going around a few years back.

A good pile of farmward manure will make any gardeners eyes light up. It is wonderful both for soil texture and as a slow release fertiliser. All manures need to be well rotted, either added to compost or left in a heap for about six months until they break down and are sweet smelling.

So now we know.

Yes, but how do you know you need it? If there's already enough nutrients in the ground then you shouldn't add horsepoo. It's not so easy as 'chuck poo on plot, spread the good seed, harvest great feast of beans'. I know this, I fooked up gardening too.
