Yes but ultimately the only thing which matters is perpetuation of the species. And even that doesn't 'matter' in the sense we use the term... species don't yearn to survive.

Of course they don't. It's just the universe unfolding, not a question of will or yearning.

If morality is based on no foundation, the only reason to follow it is self-interest.

But morality isn't based on "no foundation", it's in our nature. We've evolved to be moral, to feel good about doing the "right" thing and to feel bad when we know we are "wrong", and for that reason and others (like social ostracism or punishment) it's in our self-interest to follow the prevailing morality of our culture.

Also, if morality is based on belief in a higher power self interest plays a big part. There is no reason why you should care what god thinks unless you care what he thinks of you is there? And if you are worried about an eternal afterlife in heaven or hell then that's pure self interest, isn't it?
