A few seconds into a sound track, VLC Media Player throws a horrible scrunched up sound wobbler for a fraction of a second. This is extremely vexing, and makes it unusable for me, which is a shame as it is fine otherwise.

I've never been able to work out why, and most people I talk to haven't noticed. But I'm guessing it is making a misguided attempt to be helpful by looking up the track info on the Web, and this extra activity briefly causes a sound buffer underflow of some kind. (It only ever happens once, at about the same interval from the start of the track.)

So, very reluctantly, VLC Media Player goes to my Software Room 101

Looking at the Mac version's Preferences, "Album art download policy" has 3 options:

1. Manual
2. When track starts playing
3. As soon as track is added

Do you have the second option selected?

Probably not as its a MS application but if they do and like all the other Windows and MS application then Citrix or a VM is used. Ubuntu is primarily an end user system. My previous gig I had Debian as a desktop and although I had to faff around a lot, I got most things working on it. Tried Ubuntu 13 today in a VM and deleted it after 10 minutes as I didn't like it

There is a Linux equivalent - something like Moonlight or similar.

I prefer Linux Mint - it just works.

Moonlight, at least at the time, did not support the same flow and setup as Silverlite nor several of the features. It might be better now, Ubuntu itself might be better now but at the time, for a casual user/developer, it was agonising.

That may well be it, if the Windows version also has a Preferences menu. I thought it just worked "out of the box" so to speak.
