Ah, my point was that manual skills labour is far cheaper in the third world, so that's possibly one reason why courses for learning those skills here are diminishing. A lot of the teaching was funded one way or another by industry. -
Exactly. You're never more than a few feet from filth.Originally posted by sasguru View PostI did see a can of Coke on the next street though.
I will retract some of it, as I've a had a good poke around on streetview and I've not seen an abandoned fridge or sofa yet.Last edited by doodab; 2 September 2013, 09:00.While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

If the odd can of Coke bothers you, you need help.Originally posted by doodab View PostExactly. You're never more than a few feet from filth.

BTW I picked it up and binned it so its not there any more.
Hope that makes you feel better
Seriously though I accept your point that some London boroughs don't do enough cleaning.
It's usually the Labour ones.Hard Brexit now!

I think it's hard to get the sweeping machines in with so many cars parked alongside the kerb as well. Nicer areas tend to have off street parking so are easier to clean.Originally posted by sasguru View PostIf the odd can of Coke bothers you, you need help.

Maybe you live in the wrong place doodab. I searched "night school durham" and this was top of the list:
East Durham College
Agriculture, forestry, construction are all there alongside beauty therapy, floristry and hairdressing.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

BBC News | EDUCATION | Beckham in degree course
The Manchester United star's new haircut, marriage to Posh Spice, and sending off against Argentina in the World Cup will all come under the spotlight as part of the football culture course offered by Staffordshire University.
Staff are expecting the 12-week course to be oversubscribed as students scramble for places on it.
The course is being offered as a module which students studying media studies, sociology or sports science may choose to take as part of their degrees.

Getting back to the subject of this thread I disagree (partially) that education in this country is screwed..
The elite get educated very well in excellent universities which are a match for any in the world - the problem is that the masses (those with poor exam results, whether at A-level or GSCE) don't.
You only have to look at the cretins on CUK.Hard Brexit now!

You could just do a GCSE in CDT or whatever it's called, since that would typically cover woodwork and metal work.Originally posted by doodab View Post
If my posh(ish) private school can bring itself to teach these things, surely you can find somewhere.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

I actually have a GCSE in CDT. We did a bit of sandcasting and a bit of woodturning, basic pneumatics and electronics and mechanisms with gears and pulleys and quite a lot of technical drawing.Originally posted by d000hg View PostYou could just do a GCSE in CDT or whatever it's called, since that would typically cover woodwork and metal work.

I just want to play with a lathe and a milling machine without needing to buy one and buy a bigger shed to put it in, and without losing any fingers. Or eyes. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment
