Sounds very reasonable - kids maintenance is a sure thing, but UKs 50-50 is completely off the mark. You lucky you lived in France for so long.

[QUOTE=lukemg]What is the score with this divorce thing, do you have to keep paying for her for ever ?????
      QUOTE]

It is an unwritten law in England that regardless of blame, the man hands over his wealth during a divorce and continues to pay to his ex until he dies.

If only it were 50/50,AtW. You now hear of women suing for a share of the ex-husband's future pension and inheritance. It's fecking surreal.

Jesus, what's up with this picture !
That must be a nightmare handing cash over every month to someone you hate and who hates you and has a nice life thanks on the back of it. I would be talking to someone who knows about reducing this to the very minimum possible, got to be possible in a ltd co/contractor setup.
Kids - fair enough, you are responsible.
Ex-wife - had nowt, you bought and paid for a house, car, holidays, standard of living, it doesn't pan out for whatever reason, you give her half of everything and you have to keep paying for ever ??
Thank god I didn't sign up for this and I'm still waiting to meet someone married for more than 5 minutes who recommends it ! It's usually ' yeah, best 2 years of my life, unfortunately I've been married 10....'

Indeed. That's why, under French law, it's a one-off payment, then she can "aller se faire foutre". It makes for a clean break.

[QUOTE=BobTheCrate]4 questions for you here SwampThing.

                i) Are there any children from the marriage ? ONE

ii) How many years old was the marriage ? 5

iii) How old (roughly) were both of you when you split ? Me 38, her 32

iv) Did your wife contribute significantly to your company and/or was she a shareholder up until the time you split ? Was she employed elsewhere ?QUOTE]

I was a permie when we split. I coughed up 62% to make a clean break divorce and paying 15% child maintenance until age 17. All that the court order said re. maintenance was that I would have to inform the ex whenever I had a change of salary. For practical purposes this means an increase. Well, of course that may take a long time the way I operate. Problem is, the ex won't take my word for it that my salary hasn't risen by gazillions. She wants the last 6 months' payslips, and for me to do this every 6 months. Otherwise she'll initiate a legal fishing trip.
I can't let her know about the company. Do you think letting her have a copy of the P60 with the company name and address removed would work?

Yes its ridiculous, strange that the law in this area is so unreasonable - the rest of UKs laws seem rather reasonable but this one is totally weird.

I'm not going to get married again. I'll just find somebody I don't like, and give her a house.
