But its not photos of beautiful people, it's often very ordinary looking people that are heavily photoshoped so much that people can't mimic it without excessive plastic surgery and starving themselves

That is far more dangerous than seeing the odd breast in a lads mag

Basically this is the crux of the matter, in fact of everything. We are all individuals and each of us has our own set of what is right or wrong. The only real problem is that some people will see certain actions as fine whereas the majority will find it morally repugnant, such as child pornography and this is where lawmakers come into play making sure that those areas which offend the majority are not allowed. However, there are areas that those lawmakers take into their own hands which are not offensive to the majority of people but are deemed so and therefore it is a very difficult line to draw. Surely then, instead of a slapdash reaction, badly thought out legislation, etc. these lawmakers should obtain the consensus of the general public first?

That's the thing Mich. You are well adjusted and have self confidence bordering on arrogance. You're in a good position to make your own mind up about what's right and wrong. Not everyone is so self-assured. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable and will form their opinions about life on what's around them.

Yep, and now it gets back to my point about self discipline. You won't build that by taking young people's choices away from them or pretending that some things don't happen in people's sex lives; perhaps better to offer some training to potential parents, seeing as it's a very important job people all seem to think they can do without any kind of education or help.

The thing is Mich, parenting is a very difficult job, and it would be nice to have some control over when to introduce difficult issues. tA 5, my elder daughter has got a handle on death and the complexities of interacting with strangers. By the time she's 11, she'll need to have a handle on a whole host of things. But right now, we judge that she's not ready yet to tackle some issues. So all I really want, is to be able to go to the supermarket and find that people can buy what they like, but that the front covers are not portraying themes that I judge she is not yet ready to deal with. And if that offends people's sense of personal liberty, I hope they can bear it.

In some cultures, being fat and idle isn't considered a bad thing because it demonstrates you are wealthy enough to be in that state. The very fact you consider unfit people in a lesser light shows the social conditioning you have received.

They have their appearance because they're lazy and eat junk.
They are unhappy with it because they're told they should act a different way.

No, I certainly don't consider unfit people in a lesser light at all. However, if people don't take care of their appearance they shouldn't complain about their appearance and certainly shouldn't complain about images of people who do. Fine if they don't; maybe they find other things more important and that's OK, in fact it's probably very sensible. But if you want to have a particular appearance e.g. fat or fit, you'll have to live a certain way to get that and not complain about "ooh all these images are making me unsure of myself".
