Tracing a stolen Guitar

Music threads making lately making me weep over my nicked Ricky. I miss it, I've written if off but I thought I risk having the piss ripped out of me by foolishly asking for advice (advise for NLUK) in General.

Chronology:

1. She's a Burgundy Rickenbacker 12-string Semi-acoustic - 360/12WB (Without Binding) - rare colour.

2. Bought it early nineties from a musical instrument shop in either Reigate or Redhill - sure it was Redhill - long trip back then darn sarf...

3. Registered serial with Rickenbacker as soon as I bought it - via post - remember that? Manufactured Mar 1973

4. Lend it to my brother, and active gigger, as a favour he'd get it set up for me, setter-upper had it stolen from his car, no insurance, no police, fobbed bro off with excuses for ages.

5. At the time I had other things to worry about and hadn't seen it for ages any so I just wrote it off mentally - would be circa 2008?

Actually begs the question, if I did track it down, how would I prove it's mine?

I feel your pain.

Despite the registered serial number if there's no police report it would be very difficult to prove it's yours.

I mark all my instruments in unlikely places and if ever nicked would insist on the police being involved.

I had two of my bass guitars stolen about 18 years ago. Serial numbers registered etc, never saw them again; being a student, they weren't insured separately and the house & contents didn't cover them because they were worth over £500.

*Every time* I walk past a music shop I look in to see if they are there...

No help, but oodles of sympathy.

no just a simple Erde 122, it was great, filled it with bits of tree or junk and off down the dump. No picking bits out of the upholstery, simple chap me! Disappeared the same day the Carnies left town, strangely the Police were baffled - feckwits.

Cost me £100 new 80% off it was a wickes overstock.

Sad I know but still annoys me every time I go to the dump.

I had a sunburst Japanese made Strat that I spent all my money on when I was 18, and played in some school and university gigs. That was nicked when my flat was burgled in about 1996. Of course I never bother with serial numbers (who does that?), and all the police could suggest was looking in the likes of cash converters.

The insurance paid out for a replacement, but for reasons I never understood I was only entitled to an el-cheapo Mexican replacement, which wasn't as good and I never liked as much. I kind of lost interest after that; I had an acoustic I'd occasionally pick up, but the electric just stayed in its case. This is until about 6 months ago where for some reason I suddenly got interested again, bought a practice amp and have been toodling along to YouTube backing tracks.

So I feel the pain. The burglars nicked my guitar, all my CDs, and the stereo, but not my PC oddly enough. But it was the sentimental value of the guitar that hurt. I'd have quite happily handed over the cash to the burglar just to get it back, and said nothing to the police if I could.

Grab it and play a wicked gig music that would prove beyond doubt that you've used it for years before some scum stole it from you.

At least that's what I'd do in this situation.
