    I don't think it's "correct" in the USA, it's just what most of them do.

    Table manners are import. Ensure that you and your sons hold your cutlery correctly and hopefully she'll follow your good example.

                Yes but most etiquette is purely for its own sake rather than for logical reasons. For instance if you're eating food that requires little cutting, it makes more sense to hold you fork in the right hand the 'wrong' way up, rather than trying to push food onto the back of your fork with a knife.
