Yeah, I was being lazy. I don't really know much of London all that well. Normally I would walk, given a preference. I hadn't bothered looking at exactly where everything was and simply used the TFL journey planner to ensure I got to Moorgate by about 08:30.

I'm not really a morning person - to get in by 08:30 I already have to get up before 06:00, so don't want to go in earlier. And besides, I'm delivering training, so getting in early means nothing in work terms - I can't leave until the end of my sessions for the day. The client allows First Class train tickets on expenses so I don't need to worry on the way in / out of London. I've only got tomorrow to put up with, then back to Edinburgh where I can have a lie in and take a 30 minute walk to the office.

Oh, and there is room for politeness still - I step out of peoples way on the walk between platforms, try not to rub myself up against people more than can be avoided whilst on the train, and am perfectly happy to wait the entire 1 minute to be one of the first on the next train rather than squeezing my belly and b.o. into the last remaining bit of airspace on the previous one.

If you can put it on expense, then have you tried taking a taxi? It might be a bit longer in time, but you can surely be relaxed!

I stay with the Mrs in Clerkenwell most weeknights, I used to get the tube everyday, now i rarely get it anywhere. I cycle walk or get busses. Things on a tube map are often perceived to be a lot further than they really are.

I'm based in South Ken, but normally take contracts out of London to avoid the hellish daily commuting.

Last time I had a contract in the West End I gave up on the Tube and buses for a while, and walked - Took less than an hour, but then one has to put up with hordes of dopey rubbernecking tourists mooing about everywhere and blocking the pavements.

Last gig in London I found somewhere to stay about 10 mins walk from the office which was great.

But I used to do the St Pancras to Liverpool St for years, didn't mind the Met line, as there seems to be more space on the trains, hated using the misery (nthn) line as it was a mare.

The constant disrepecting of these boundaries is a necessity for survival in London however it causes low level stress that turns everyone into an arsehole eventually. It is the reason for the moral decrepitude that permeates the great metropolis.

There are two solutions. Either get taxis everywhere (or try the bus to/from liverpool street) or go to the pub after work and travel home later when the tubes are empty.

Or arrange different working hours. 8 to 4 or 10 to 6 can be much more civilised. I aim for 11 to 2 when in London.
