I have driven quite a lot in the states, and it simply makes sense, as does their turn right on a red light malarkey.

In fact, the states have got a lot of their driving tulip right.

Speed limit is 65 on most interstates now, and some states have no limits on the roads out of town.
A few of the states that I've driven in have had a speed limit of 70mph. I was living in PA when congress passed the act which allowed a speed limit of over 55mph, but then left it to each state to decide whether to change it or not. PA left it at 55, much to my parents' disgust.

I try not to undertake in this country. I get more satisfaction from nipping in from the outside to the inside lanes, washing my windscreen as I hit the middle lane

The little squirters on xenon headlights are good for this; just turn one of them 90 degrees to squirt sideways.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

Back in the day, me and my brother used to do club rallying, and it was de-rigueur to have a full on PIAA spotlight fixed to the rear bumper. Sometimes this would be adjusted and if you popped past someone who was dawdling, we found a quick switch flicked sorted this out pronto.

          WOHS +1

Allowing passing on both sides does seem to be a better solution than what we have a present, however I noticed that there were more 'feds' on the US Interstate (75 if yer interested) than you'd ever see on a UK motorway. That discourages the excessive speed merchants.

I found driving in the US to be far more enjoyable than trying to negotiate the free for all that is the M4/3/27/5/54/50/6/62/25 and all the rest.

I couldn't agree with this more. To be frank, driving in the states has taught me if you want to arrive somewhere less stressed, then pop cruise on and sit around at 60-70mph. Invariably, you do not lose that much time, and are sooooo much more relaxed when you get there. Going toe to toe with the plethora of Audis and BMW's on our motorways makes me a bit tetchy and stressed, so I no longer bother.

I can see the benefit as a driver, but how does that work for pedestrians?

As an aside during my trips to the continent I notice the total non use of any crawler lane provided on inclines unless you is a lorry- I always move into these adopting the Brit drive on the left (in this case the right) model unless overtaking ...is I wrong?
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

IIRC, it's only on un-pedestrianised intersections. Of which there are lots.

I do the same. I thought the French were good at this last time out (can't remember before then....).

Not wrong in NL, where the law is pretty clear on this (unlike other things); you drive on the right as much as possible, and only move to the left when overtaking. Now explain this to all those twats pulling caravans in the middle lane in the rush hour. Or attack them with RPGs; I don't care, whichever takes your fancy.
