It works, and its sequels don't, because the film takes time to set up and get to know the characters, what drives them. IOt's the age old thing that you have to care about the protagonists.

It's absolutely one of my favourite sci-fi films. I must have seen it 8-9 times
Having said that, there's some other great shouts on this thread, such as Dark Star, Flesh Gordon (!!).
But are they "Space" films? Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff are both good. And Moon, which I'd also class as a "space" film.
