The Met Office is one of the few places in the world that knows the location of all the Trident Submarines so it can send weather data to them, I know I used to work thereOriginally posted by AtW View PostMet Office?
What's secret there - reliable weather forecast given only to the RAF?

Yes. The Met Office play a very important role in military planning. It's quite feasible that weather forecasts in some part of the world are handed to the military before being given to the public, or even that a forecast might not be given to the public somewhere. They also get special requests from MoD for weather information in places where the armed forces are operating; knowing which forecasts the armed forces have requested could provide clues on operations they are planning, the approximate location of ships etc.Originally posted by AtW View PostMet Office?

You'd be very, very surprised. Before 2011, the Met Office was run by the MOD. Should give a few clues away.Originally posted by AtW View PostMet Office?

I worked on models regarding the levels of volcanic ash in the atmosphere, at any time, at any level. Then we modeled the dispersal of said particles.
Wouldn't be a genius that 'could' put said practices into a MOD like scenario...Comment

There are many countries where the national weather service still falls under defence. Watch the weather forecast in Italy for example; they have naval officers in uniform presenting the weather. Oh, and a couple of channels where fit birds with very little clothing present it. They're not run my the defence ministry, but probably more popular among the soldiers.Originally posted by Old Hack View PostYou'd be very, very surprised. If they were bombing sensitive places, I don't know, where some chemicals might be located lets say, they might need to know how it would be dispersed in the atmosphere too...Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostYes. Might also be useful where there have been radiation leaks too, sub aqua or not...Comment

One of the places I worked with SC, the project team got a security violation because someone left a blank piece of paper on the printer at night.Originally posted by Paddy View PostIn most cases SC is a complete farce. You get on site and the internal security is like a sieve. Many government departments never used to require SC nor is there a need to do so. The real reason for SC is that they want all their cock-ups and inefficacies kept secret
I accidentally left a post-it note stuck on my desk (nothing on it). Came in in the morning and my colleague had labelled it "not protectively marked".Comment
