John hurt is from before the doctor chose to be Dr Who. He made a conscious choice to be this goodie, but clearly has a dark past. I suspect John hurt is the doctor from just after the time war.

Either before William Hartnell, so the 1st doctor, or between McGann and Ecclestone, which is probably a high single-digit doctor - can't be arsed to count them.

A good twist IMO though.
