Up until I was about 23 I only really had one ambition which was to play rugby for England. FAILED, but had a good time while trying. Then hoped to play 7s for England; FAILED, but had a good time trying and won a bit of silverware, travelled a lot and earned some beer money. Then re-adjusted ambition again, to get a great job and work my way up to CEO of a huge insultancy. FAILED; realised after about 2 years that I hated permiedom and hated arselicking, both of which would prevent said ambition coming true. Learnt some skills along the way which have helped me as a contractor.
If there's one thing I've learned from this is that what works for me is to aim high, work hard on the goal, but to enjoy the trying and enjoy what I DO achieve along the way; that's not necessarily what works for others, after all I'm not some US style motivation guru and wouldn't want to be, but it seems to work for me. Oh, and these days I don't publicise my ambitions as much as I did.
