    Re: Imitation

A lot of the hunger and poverty in Africa could be solved by not having religious nutters like the Pope banning contraception.
Even better just ban organised religions, if someone wants to worship their god in the comfort of their home fine but ban all the priests from using religion to gain power, wealth and influence at the expense of the poorest and most vulnerable in society.

      Educating the atheist

      Bum

At least you have the sense to admit that your posts are stupid. You think you are well informed but you are not. The Catholic position is essentially this - all sexual activity should be confined to the marriage bed. If this happened do you think Aids would be the problem it is? I do not share their views on contraception however do you really believe the people most at risk of Aids are devout Catholics/ or Christians who are grappling with their beliefs? No they are just like you - people off no faith leading a life of instant pleasure - the difference is that the lack of prevailing education and information about Aids (remember when AIDS came about in 80's their governments did not have the funds to launch massive public campaigns about the dangers of it) and other reason is poverty. Your poor farmer sitting in Bulawayo overcome with passion is not likely to put on hold his desires and pop into his local newsagents and pick up some condoms is he?

The problem with so called atheists like you is that you say humans can live in a logical and rational world without the concept of divine values while at the same time you harbour racist and sexist tendencies ready to strike when you have opportunity. Yep you are right that is normal for you. Secular humanism lead to a century of isms ...fascism, communism, relativism ... they have all failed with devastating consequences.

What the world needs is strong men and women of faith who will take the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world and will stay the course.

Re: people off no faith leading a life of instant pleasure

Unfortunately for this, yet another totally and stupidly wrong argument, is that the greatest number of practising Catholics are now in the third world, especially Africa. Us atheist "hedonists" in the West are not the ones catching AIDS in greatest numbers.

There is little correlation between faith and human behaviour. Most people twist their beliefs, or lack of them, to fit in with whatever they want to do.

            You are wrong again. WRONG

nope most are in Latin America. We do not hear of a massive AIDS problem there do we?

There is little correlation between faith and human behaviour.
That may be true of people today who pick and choose bits of different faiths and off course faithless atheist were anything goes as long as it feels good at that time.

              Re: Educating another atheist

I would suggest Chico, that if you need the artifical framework of an external belief system to try and make you a better person, then you are essentially lacking the capability to self-examine and modify your own behaviour.

Change has to come from within, not from outside. You should be the architect of your own change, not an external framework that acts as a crutch for the hard-of-thinking.

But hey, if the happy-clappies are warm and fuzzy in their faith and it keeps them off the streets and gives them purpose, as opposed to sitting at home polishing the guns, then I am all for it.

Ask yourself this....if you were God, would you do anything differently. Would you tire of working in the shadows, and actually prefer to do something a little more tangible and direct ? To actually help people in the here and now, rather than let them suffer ?

God's record isn't exactly inspiring. His alleged existence has caused more suffering in the world than helped the downtrodden. If anyone should be judged...it's God.

                  Atheism

Not So Wise, a small technical point:
Atheism is, essentially, a negative position. It is not believing in a god, or actively believing there is no God,
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Correct
Not quite correct, although the above is a bit ambiguous. To clarify, an atheist is one who denies the existence of a god.

                    Re: Atheism

Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, UNAIDS, July 2004: Epidemiology and Trends

Approximately 1.2 to 2.1 million adults and children are living with HIV in Latin America--a figure that includes the estimated 140,000 to 340,000 people who acquired the virus in 2003. AIDS-related illnesses killed between 65,000 and 110,000 people in the region in 2003.
But Chico's never heard of them, so they're probably just making it up.

                      Re: Atheism

That we can live good, ethical, lives without religious or superstitious beliefs

That we can make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values

That we have only one life and that it's our responsibility to make it a good life, and live it to the full

That we should take responsibility for our actions and work with others for the common good

How can the above be classified as negative?
