Off to Brussels with Mrs SB and another pair of couples in June for a long weekend. Was wondering if anyone had any tips as to good bars to visit? I am specifically thinking of places that specialise in showcasing Belgian Beer rather than the sort of plastic Irish Bars/Dives that most of the expat community seem to install themselves in.

Bars in Brussels - Recommendations?
“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun. And the first vessel to have departed is Britain” -
was in Brussels last year - to be honest any of the bars in the various squares will give you a decent range of beers - but try n stay away from the main square (whose name escapes me) as the prices are a bit steep.
What I would recomend is a trip to Leuven (where the Stella originally comes from) about 30 - 45 mins on the train from Brussels - quite a few bars in there.
I went to one which had over 500 different beers - each with it's own different glass - after a few we stopped choosing the beer and just picked a glass and drank what beer came with it....
Did not end well!

So you'll be avoiding sean o'casey's, Celtica, wild geese etc.
To be fair, best way is to wander round the Grand place and pop into a few that take you fancy.
Down by the shopping district is the excellent mort subite which I've now seen being sold here in the UK. First time in there you gasp at the amount of beer they throw away from the bottle.Comment

Grand Place or Grote Markt. Worth going to see it in the evening, but find a bar on a sidestreet. Avoid Kolenmarkt unless you're into man-love.Originally posted by original PM View Postwas in Brussels last year - to be honest any of the bars in the various squares will give you a decent range of beers - but try n stay away from the main square (whose name escapes me) as the prices are a bit steep.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014Comment

Cheers folks, all good info.
Was thinking of "Moeder Lambic" as it seems to get good reviews.

Not a bar but maybe worth a look if you are in a group. We had a great meal at the Beluga Queen
Belga Queen - Restaurant - Brasserie - Club - Gent in de graslei & Bruxelles - Rue Foss aux Loups, by Antoine Pinto, belgaqueen
If you head north east out of the Grand Place, i.e Town hall on your left, do down to the Stock exchange and over the road (and left abit with stock exchange behind you) there are lots of little quaint back street bars and cafes which had a great atmosphere on a warm night. Can't comment on the quality of the beer but it seemed to be the locals hang out and nice continental sitting on the street option.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

I'd second a trip to Leuven, just make sure you don't take a train to New Leuven as there's only a university there (yes I made that mistake!!!). You can drink all night, then get the first train home..although you're probably a bit grown up for that now.Originally posted by original PM View Postwas in Brussels last year - to be honest any of the bars in the various squares will give you a decent range of beers - but try n stay away from the main square (whose name escapes me) as the prices are a bit steep.
