I think it's a matter of how things are said. On immigration for example, there is no need for politicians to get into slanging matches or start immigrant bashing which is sure to annoy British minorities of the same background. A lot of Hague's stuff was rather negative, I am sure it could have been handled much better.
Just announce policies in terms that it is difficult for anyone to disagree with: reasonable numbers, tighter border controls to prevent illegal entry, much tighter checks on individuals to ensure no criminal record, significant positive economic contribution, English speaking and willingness to fit in with British culture and accept British laws.
Refuse to rise to the lefty bait and start pointing out all the appalling consequences of recent immigration. There is simply no need, most people can see that for themselves.
