What were you doing when Thatcher was at the peak of her power?

I worked for Age Concern for a little while, visiting the housebound frail-and-elderly. There was a fairly steady turnover as people popped their clogs, which was only to be expected; but there were at least two of my visits who I believe died before their time as a direct result of Thatcher's policies. That's one of a number of reasons why I hold her in utter contempt. To quote my mother on the phone just now: may God have more compassion for her than she ever had for the people whose lives she destroyed.

If it had not been for her many more people would have died of poverty. Our indulgence with socialism is what destroyed the lives of so many exacerbated by the evil of the Trade Unions.

in 1979 I was working as a personnel officer (before HT was invented) in a small engineering company in Wembley where lots of ugandan asians worked - they were the best engineers and deserved a hell of a lot better treatment than they got, but now their sons are running the local economy. I remember having to go to the Accounts Manager and tell him he wasnt allowed to operate a colour bar. In the end he had to employ indian staff as the locals just weren't good enough. The company went to the wall some time in the 80s.
