Proof of the BBC's left-leaning bias: the story is not even one of the main stories - it's hidden as a single line item. They don't want to publicise anything that shows people showing support to right-wing parties like UKIP.

I don't think it is the case of the Conservatives splitting the UKIP vote, rather the other way round. Had UKIP not stood then most UKIP voters would have voted Conservative, resulting in a Conservative victory.

Come the general election then a Tory-UKIP merger or Tory-UKIP coalition is the best way to get those two parties into Government.

At least Labour came reassuringly fourth...

Yes quite and they led with the news of that UKIP woman defecting to the Tories last week

It's not like Gordon Brown was ever elected PM.

Labour shouldn't stand a chance to win the next general election with a "leader" like Ed Miliband. So the fact that they're now doing rather well in the polls really highlights just how much the coalition has messed up.

It's been a while since I was able to calculate an exact figure of how much money me and my family are personally losing out on per year as a result of one ill-thought-through policy after another introduced by the ConDem government. And that's coming from someone very firmly within the target demographic of the Tories. If they can't even please their target voters, they're doing something seriously wrong.

"The story" is who won the election; that's how news about elections works. UKIP's showing is mentioned in the first sentence of the story along with the result, and is the subject of the entirety of the third paragraph:

Then there's lots more about it further down. That's called an inverted pyramid and is standard journalistic practice throughout the world: Inverted pyramid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And realise that the bit of the news that makes you wet your pants may not actually be the important part that goes on top.

I'm talking about the home page not the story page.
Here are the main stories on the current BBC News home page:
            • SA 'arrest abuse' police suspended
            • China executes four Mekong killers
            • Hugo Chavez 'battling for his life'

No sign of the Eastleigh byelection until the fifth smaller story:
            • UKIP edges Tories in UK by-election

Which makes it sound more like a sex act than real news..

If I look at Nigel Farage's background I also see that he has no post-18/university education, despite coming from a priviledged enough family background to have attended a prestigious private school.
Why does this not surprise me?

Well that's turned the argument on its head, hasn't it.

I always have a little chuckle to myself when I remember Obama refusing to give Brown any time in the US, and Brown going there anyway and ambushing him in a basement kitchen as he tried to sneak out.

I think Nick's point is proven.
The result of a by-election in the South of England isn't really big news for the BBC's global audience.
                  Hard Brexit now!

Probably not as much as you'd be losing with Ed Balls at the helm.

Unless you feed your family on Cornish pasties of course
