The compilation of the bible from the various sources is fairly well established historically. The Dead Sea scrolls show that portions of the old testament are at least 2000 years old. The books making up the OT were decided upon in around AD90, by a bunch of Rabbis - primarily as a defence against Christianity.

Some people here find Janet and John a bit hard going, so I'm not surprised they find the bible difficult. Despite it being not particularly hard to understand in modern translation or paraphrase. If people would approach it as literature rather than a rule book, they'd find it a lot easier going.

The KJV is a jewel of the English language, and even that isn't hard to follow.

Why people who are so ignorant on the subject of religion keep banging on about it beats me.

It is not hard to follow, it is not the bible that is hard to understand. What is hard to understand is why people cannot see there is no more truth to it than there is to any other religion that has ever (and will ever) be invented.

The bible is full of attrocities, contradictions and scientific mistakes and yet it is penned by a being of unimited intelligence. These things cannot both be true but we can verify the first by reading the bible which just leaves the second.

Even a being of unlimited power makes more sense, if there is nothing he cannot do then can he cook a curry that is too hot for him to eat?

Bible or religion aside. I need people around me that I can trust. If I am allowing a cleaner into my home and the VCR is in danger of leaving with team I would rather give them an extra large job and offer them 500 notes to sort it out for me.

On the other side to this issue I would make it known that If I ever had to come looking for something that went missing again they would not be dealing with the police...

But can it make jokes that go over it's own head?

It hardly takes the Infinite for that.

Or you could also quote Matthew 10:35:
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

So basically, the son of god, who is himself, and who got his own mother pregnant to have himself, to repent for sin which he himself created, came to start a bunch of fights in families. By provoking argument, we're therefore allegedly being 'christian'.

                    No?

Do you mean religion as a whole or Christianity? I know a fair bit about both - having been brooght up as a Christian (and read the Bible extensively as the precocious child I was) and also having explored and read about other belief systems/religions as well as some of the psychological/neuroscientific lit. on religiosity.
And my conclusion is that of all the belief systems, the older ones such as Buddhism, are more mature and more useful to human beings, being less prescriptive and more understanding of the true human condition.
