They'll threaten bankruptcy.

If he's smart, he'll borrow another £700 and declare himself bankrupt, thereby getting rid of all debt to HMRC plus credit cards and anything else. Not a great idea is he owns his house (in this case, do the research). And he shouldn't get his car MOT'd as they'll seize it so the less it's worth the better.

Losing his job provides the perfect reason to go tits up.
