2.5 years ago baby bp went into hospital 4 times in 7 weeks. No doubt some would see that as sign of abuse. But if you toss a coin 20 times there is a 25% chance of a run of 5 of same outcomes.

Its a bit like that lady who got sent to jail after her 2 children suffered cot death.

Why should doctors be put in an impossible position?

Of course in the cases like baby p and climbie one would hope the warning signs would be followed up. This is where you need social workers who will step in and do the right thing - instead of trying to persecute men.

Why should doctors be put in an impossible position?

Bad analogy. The % of a chance being admitted to hospital is much lower than 50%. Hence, after you'd beaten baby BP 4 times in 7 weeks the chances of that are more likely to be 50000-1, in addition there are only so many door handles Mrs BP can walk into in a month as well.
Of course in the cases like baby p and climbie one would hope the warning signs would be followed up. This is where you need social workers who will step in and do the right thing - instead of trying to persecute men.

They can now connect across A&E's and do stats, why not use them.

OK they may not always get it right but its a great way to identify the outliers, of course most people believe that the computer can't be wrong so they will lock someone up who uses an A&E when on holiday or at their aunties but its better than doing nothing.

After the 80s when Japan ripped through us with manufacturing quality the MechEng put stats on the course for mechanical degrees. Quality was never a concern until then. Engineers were able to deal with the maths.

Doctors are not really that scientific believe it or not, they have very little maths beyond what they have been given in school and they struggle with numbers, they could not handle even the simplest stats, pharmaceuticals do that for them.

Government are now ripping though the medical community with prescribing habits and they don't know how to deal with it.
