The tories believe in giving money away too. Or they would never get in power. There are no real tories left. -
You're just sounding as idiotic as Kelvin now.Originally posted by ZARDOZ View PostI for one am sick of subsidising their feckless ways and I would start by making Kelvin get a proper name and a proper job.Comment

Thatcher started giving money away in the form of tax cuts which were paid for by selling the national infrastructure down the river. Labour kept up the trend cos it was the only way they could get elected.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostSorry BP but the Tories would never have borrowed and spent in the way that Labour did - you have no evidence from which to to make such an assertion. Yes they would probably have fallen foul of the banking crisis but there is not a shred of evidence from their recent past (40 years) that they would be careless with money.
Labour fundamentally believe in giving money away, the recipients of which will always vote for them. The Tories fundamentally believe in individual freedom and personal responsibility.
The only difference is who they bribe.
Ironically I think that a tory government might have been less willing to let the city run amok. That would have been a good thing.Last edited by doodab; 4 December 2012, 11:07.While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

Tax cuts aren't giving money away, they're not stealing money in the first place. And they weren't primary funded by selling infrastructure. Labour kept up the trend because market control and government ownership had been proven to be complete folly.Originally posted by doodab View PostThatcher started giving money away in the form of tax cuts which were paid for by selling the national infrastructure down the river. That's not really true is it?Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostWe are actually subsidising the largesse of the previous government that you Northern people voted for.
The only other ways to fund them are borrowing, raising new taxes, or cutting spending. Clue: It wasn't cutting spending.Originally posted by Robinho View PostTax cuts aren't giving money away, they're not stealing money in the first place. Before too long Scotland will have separated itself from the UK, so Kelvin's recommendation will be partially fulfilled.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostIt is mainly the north and scotland that vote labourComment

A lower tax rate does not necessarily mean lower tax revenues. Spending as a % of GDP fell under thatcher, whilst total revenues climbed.Originally posted by ZARDOZ View PostThe only other ways to fund them are borrowing, raising new taxes, or cutting spending. I remember seeing Mackenzie on Question Time a few years ago, when he did another such attack, particularly on Scotland that time. In my prejudice I thought he might get some support from the Cheltnham audience, being as how they would seem to be the good guys in his mythology.
Far from it. The good people of Cheltenham booed him roundly. They didn't just murmur dissent, they booed, and they did it without hesitation. They knew a lot of evil codswallop when they heard it. All credit to them.
I know a lot of evil codswallop when I hear it too. And so should you.
Mackenzie is like O'Leary but much less entertaining: when you're selling crap, no publicity is bad publicity. Mackenzie is selling a stupid divisive dishonest pack of lies, it's his stock in trade. Shame on you for buying it and for trying to help him sell it.Job motivation: how the powerful steal from the stupid.Comment
