The fact that the government forcefully has to divert resources to build crossrail is proof enough that it's a waste of money, because if it made economic sense to build it, the private sector would voluntarily build it.

If teachers and nurses aren't getting paid a lot it's because they failed to read the signals of the market, the market said, society demands these higher paying jobs more than your job, yet they chose a vocational career. Which is fine, they just have to accept by choosing a career that they wanted to do, instead of one that society demanded, they are going to have to accept lower pay. But it's their life and their choice.
Of course education and healthcare are distorted by the government because they have an effective monopoly on both - the government effectively chooses the level of demand and not consumers themselves.
