I nearly googled uruk-hai hobbit porn, but thought better of it.

Sometimes violence might not be morally correct but I guess it is understandable.

I would not go so far as to say it is never morally acceptable to initiate force - I have done it before when I thought I was about to be attacked and felt quite justified in doing so.

Be ruthless. Go for the kill when your opponent is not expecting it. Use overwhelming violence.
            Otherwise run like the wind.

If you had legitimate reason to believe you were about to be attacked i wouldn't consider that initiating force, for the sake of the principal anyway.

Exactly, this could just be very fast reflexes, sometimes you can see a slight tension building around the eye, which is them initiating force first, so BOOM! twat em.

                    First hit.

In this instance, he was banged up for an attack based on a groundless suspicion. Turned out, it wasn't groundless, and therefore he did have a mitigating circumstance (the law does recognise that people sometimes act out of character when they're upset), and so his sentence was reduced appropriately.

However, he still has a criminal record, he's still working out his sentence, so his act is still recognised as bad. Just not as bad as just beating someone up for the heck of it.
