He is a holding midfielder, like Makelele, which is a messy job that does not get noticed, but is hugely important.

There are many who don't know what qualities Makelele brings to a team. Real Madrid included - they got rid of him and have won nothing in the three years since.
Believe me, your knowledge of the importance of a 'holding midfielder' isn't as revolutionary as you may think. To give 2 examples, Patrick Viera and Roy Keane are also 'holding midfielders' who, unlike this useless scroat Hargreaves, assisted if not scored many goals for their teams. Given that Englands problems in the world cup have been an inability to score rather then defend, surely Michael Carrick, who has enjoyed a fantastic season for Spurs, should be played instead.

No one is claiming it's revolutionary - but it will be essential against the better teams given that we have a top heavy midfield. With a reliable holding player both Gerard and Lampard can proble a little further upfield.
It's interesting that a Paraguay player reckons that Hargreaves introduction caused problems for them as then England could break out instead of sitting deep.
I agree he hasn't gelled yet - maybe today he'll show what he can do. I reckon it's his last chance anyway.

I never said it was revolutionary. Nobby Stiles was one of the best ever, but he only ever scored one for England, and he achieved as much as Vierra and Keane. Likewise Makelele - how many goals do you think he has scored?

Like I said, you are only looking at the superficial.

Unless I'm mistaken, he doesn't even play a holding midfield role for Bayern Munich does he? Owen Hargreaves is no Makelele, Viera or Keane. The holding midfielder role is an important one but he'll never fullfill it the same way as they would. They're strong aggressive midfielders who win back balls in midfield and break up the opposing team's play. Is Owen Hargreaves capable of this? I dont think so. Nothing he's done for us in the past would suggest he is.
