So anyway, how come I get linkedin stuff when I'm not on linkedin & never have been.

I've always assumed it's a form of the lonely Russian lady email scam.

They are linked with other sites so you can give them permission to trawl your email address book. They then send out link to messages to every fecker and his missus, whether they are on Linkedin or not. Same goes for Facebook.

I'm not sure I'd give much heed to endorsements, isn't it just "Bob says Paul really can use Java, it's not a big fat lie"?

Recommendations are far more valuable, they're also relatively hard to get because they take time to write. A nice collection of LI recommendations is a good thing to nurture.
